About the CSA Exam

The ServiceNow Certified System Administrator (CSA) is the entry-level certification for the ServiceNow platform. It validates your ability to configure and administer a ServiceNow instance โ€” not just use it. Earning the CSA opens doors at every major ServiceNow employer and is often listed as a preferred or required qualification in job descriptions.

The Six Exam Domains

ServiceNow publishes the official exam blueprint, which tells you exactly how much of the exam covers each topic area. Study time should be allocated proportionally.

DomainWeightKey Topics
UI & Navigation~11%Lists, forms, navigator, filters, personalisation
Collaboration~9%Connect, notifications, approvals, SLAs
Database Management~14%Tables, fields, relationships, data imports
Self-Service~13%Service Catalogue, Knowledge Base, Service Portal
ITSM Application~22%Incident, Change, Problem, CMDB
Platform Development~31%Business Rules, Client Scripts, ACLs, Update Sets

๐Ÿ“Œ Study priority: Platform Development is nearly a third of the exam. Business Rules, Client Scripts, and Access Controls (ACLs) deserve the most study time. Don't let the Platform Development section catch you by surprise.

12-Week Study Plan

If you're doing the NowxLabs bootcamp, you're already covering all of this in your weekly work. If you're self-studying, here's a structured approach:

1

Weeks 1โ€“2: Platform Foundations

Get a PDI (free from developer.servicenow.com). Learn navigation, UI, forms, lists, filters. Complete ServiceNow's free "Welcome to ServiceNow" and "ServiceNow Fundamentals" courses on Now Learning.

2

Weeks 3โ€“4: Database & Tables

Understand table inheritance, field types, dictionary entries, display values, and how to import data. This is fundamental to everything else on the platform.

3

Weeks 5โ€“6: ITSM Processes

Work through Incident, Problem, Change, and Request Management. Know the default states, workflows, SLA definitions, and escalation rules for each process.

4

Weeks 7โ€“9: Scripting & Development

Business Rules (all four types), Client Scripts (onLoad, onChange, onSubmit), Script Includes, ACLs, and Update Sets. Write real scripts in your PDI, don't just read about them.

5

Weeks 10โ€“12: Practice Tests & Weak Areas

Take full practice exams, identify your weak domains, go back and close the gaps. Aim to consistently score 80%+ on practice tests before sitting the real exam.

Exam Day Tips from Graduates

Read Every Question Twice

CSA questions often hinge on a single word โ€” "before", "after", "server-side", "client-side". Read carefully before selecting an answer.

Eliminate Wrong Answers First

Most CSA questions have one clearly wrong answer and one that's close but incorrect. Eliminate the obvious wrong options and your odds on the remaining choices improve significantly.

Don't Overthink Scenario Questions

Scenario-based questions describe a business requirement and ask what you'd configure. Think about what ServiceNow feature most directly solves the problem โ€” it's rarely an unusual or advanced solution.

Flag and Return

90 minutes for 60 questions gives you 90 seconds per question. If you're unsure, flag it and move on. Come back with fresh eyes once you've completed the questions you know.

๐ŸŽฏ Our success rate: NowxLabs graduates who sit the CSA after completing the bootcamp pass at a rate of over 90% on their first attempt, compared to an industry average of around 60โ€“65%.
